Two Chicago punk institutions just traded songs. Rise Against has covered Alkaline Trio's "Private Eye," while Alkaline Trio has answered with its own version of Rise Against's "Re-Education (Through Labor)." Both tracks are out now as a digital split single, with a limited-edition 7-inch also available.

This collaboration reaches back well beyond the size of either band's current stage. Both groups came up through the same Chicago scene, watched one another grow from tiny rooms into globally recognized bands, and now get to drag two familiar songs through their own amps and personalities.

Rise Against keeps the anxious momentum of "Private Eye" intact while turning it into something built for Tim McIlrath's voice. Alkaline Trio takes the political pulse of "Re-Education (Through Labor)" and filters it through that unmistakable dark, melodic Trio delivery. This is exactly what a split single should be: two bands showing mutual respect without simply photocopying the originals.

We have an understanding and appreciation of each other's bands that could only come from being from the same scene.

The split arrives just before the bands launch an extensive U.S. co-headlining tour. It is a homecoming, a tribute and one hell of a way to warm up before sharing a stage every night.
