CHANCE THE RAPPER, LA REEZY (A Parent’s Perspective) SHOW REVIEW!

Chance the Rapper has been one of my favorite rappers for years, and somehow I still hadn't seen him live. When the final stop of his Coloring Book anniversary tour landed in Pittsburgh, I wasn't letting another chance go by.

Coloring Book came out in May 2016 as a streaming-only mixtape, then went on to win the Grammy for Best Rap Album. That was a hell of a statement from an independent artist. The music backed it up, mixing gospel, rap, and soul without losing Chance's personality.

Ten years later, Chance brought those songs to Citizens Live at The Wylie for the tour's last night. La Reezy opened. I walked in ready to cross Chance off my concert bucket list, and walked out with another artist to keep listening to.

Sunday, October 11, 2026, Chance the Rapper and La Reezy came to Citizens Live at The Wylie in Pittsburgh. I had been waiting a long time to see Chance, but first up was La Reezy, and he made damn sure the opening set was part of the story.

La Reezy kicked off with “Hot” and “Family Bizzy.” He worked in a Pittsburgh-specific interlude, moved through “How Did You Love Me,” “Melanate It,” and “HARDHEAD,” and even brought out a piano-only piece of “Flashing Lights.” It was a set with its own shape, including a couple of moments made for this city.

After “God Forgive Me,” he played “MOVE.” Then he played “MOVE” again. He closed with “We Live.” I loved his set. When you're this excited for the headliner, an opener has to work to stay in your memory, and La Reezy did by bringing Atlanta to Pittsburgh for the final night of the tour.

Then came Chance.

He opened with “All We Got” and “Blessings,” putting Coloring Book right up front. “Ride” and “Tree” from Star Line came next, before “Summer Friends” transitioned into “Angels.” Then he hit “All Night,” “No Problem,” and “Mixtape.” If you had been waiting years to see him, that run was a hell of a payoff.

I knew these songs long before I walked into The Wylie. Finally hearing Chance perform them was the whole reason I'd kept his name on my bucket list. The run from “All We Got” through “Mixtape” reminded me why Coloring Book still works ten years later: it can sound huge and joyful without pretending life is always simple.

The set wasn't a straight playthrough of Coloring Book. “I Might Need Security,” “Drapetomania,” and “The Highs & The Lows” pulled in other chapters, while “Smoke Break” and “Juke Jam” brought the night back to the mixtape we were there to celebrate. “Link Me in the Future” led toward a reprise of “All We Got,” giving the main set a callback to where it began. It was cool to hear him look back without trapping himself in 2016.

For the encore, Chance went back to Acid Rap with “Cocoa Butter Kisses” before ending on “Same Drugs.” That was a smart way to close a tenth-anniversary show. The song already looks back at how people change; putting it at the end of this night gave it even more weight. When you're a parent, ten years isn't some abstract number. You can see it in your kids.

I came to Pittsburgh to finally see one of my favorite rappers, got to do that on the last night of the tour, and La Reezy gave me another name to remember along the way.

Bucket-list item crossed off. Music still coming home with me.
