Wiz Khalifa Makes History at Pittsburgh's New "The Wylie" Venue (A Parent's Perspective) SHOW REVIEW!

Pittsburgh has a brand-new room for making concert memories, and Wiz Khalifa was an awfully fitting choice to help break it in. On October 2, Citizens Live at The Wylie hosted its first rap show and the second concert of its opening season, with DJ Bonics, a short set from BossMan Dlow, and a hometown headliner whose biggest city anthem practically comes with its own Terrible Towel. From a parent’s perspective, nights like this are a reminder that having responsibilities doesn’t mean retiring the part of yourself that loves a loud room and a great show.

Before getting to Wiz, though, we need to talk about the building. The Wylie is an experience in itself. Sitting within the former Civic Arena redevelopment area in Pittsburgh’s Lower Hill District, it arrives with a connection to a place that already holds decades of memories for local fans. Walking into a new music venue here carries a little more weight than checking out another room with a stage and a bar. There’s something about getting older that makes you appreciate that history a little differently. A concert becomes another chapter in the city’s story, alongside the memories you hope the next generation gets to make.

That history also reaches beyond the Igloo. Wylie Avenue was once a center of Black cultural life and music, and the construction of the Civic Arena displaced thousands of residents. The new venue acknowledges the neighborhood’s musical legacy through details inspired by the Crawford Grill and photographs from the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive. There is a much longer Pittsburgh story behind these walls.

Then there are the details that make you want to wander around before the music starts. Bar areas, a rooftop bar, an upstairs Vinyl Room, and a vintage photo booth give fans plenty to explore. Yes, an actual photo booth, the kind that makes you squeeze in like you’re back at the mall and hope everyone manages a decent face before the flash goes off. The mall photo booth nostalgia hits especially hard when you’re the parent now. Suddenly, the goofy little souvenir makes just as much sense as the concert shirt.

The suspended mirrored piano is the real stop-and-look moment. Inspired by the piano at the historic Crawford Grill, it hangs above the lobby bar like the building decided a regular light fixture wasn’t nearly extra enough. It is a striking centerpiece with a local connection, and exactly the sort of detail you remember after leaving.

More than anything, the room feels spacious, and the sound is incredible. All those extras are fun, but the music still has to deliver. On that front, our first visit left a hell of a good impression. Parent brain appreciates a little breathing room, even when concert brain is focused on the stage. A spacious room and great sound are a pretty damn good combination.

DJ Bonics and BossMan Dlow rounded out the night’s bill before Wiz’s headline set. Dlow’s appearance was brief, but it belongs in the story of The Wylie’s first night of rap. With Bonics also involved, the evening had another familiar connection to Wiz’s world.

Wiz’s set opened with “Taylor Gang,” followed by “23,” “Roll Up,” and “No Sleep,” according to the show’s posted setlist. “Errday” and “GangBang” kept the early stretch rooted in his mixtape catalog before the night reached the song that carries a very particular charge in this city. And yes, “No Sleep” is a title that parents can recognize on a deeply personal level, even if Wiz and the school morning alarm are describing very different situations.

“Black and Yellow” gets a reaction anywhere. In Pittsburgh, it has home-field advantage. It was one of the night’s biggest crowd moments, with the familiar hook carrying the kind of local pride that makes a hometown show feel different. Hearing it during the opening weekend of a new Pittsburgh venue gave that connection another layer.

“On My Level,” “Work Hard, Play Hard,” and “You and Your Friends” followed, while “See You Again” brought another major crowd response. The song associated with Furious 7 remains one of Wiz’s most recognizable crossover moments, and it stood out alongside the city anthem as a highlight of the night. As a parent, “See You Again” can land a little differently. A song about missing someone has a way of reminding you how much the people in your life matter, even in the middle of a big night out.

“We Dem Boyz” led into the closing “Young, Wild & Free,” another crowd favorite that put a celebratory finish on the set. Between that closer, “See You Again,” and “Black and Yellow,” the evening’s biggest reactions came from songs that have traveled well beyond Wiz’s original fan base while keeping their place in his live shows. “Young, Wild & Free” might sound a little aspirational when your calendar has school mornings and grown-up obligations on it. For the length of a song, though, singing along still feels pretty easy.

For a venue still in its opening weekend, The Wylie gave us plenty of reasons to come back. The spacious layout, outstanding sound, and little discoveries throughout the building made the visit memorable on their own. Add Wiz Khalifa bringing “Black and Yellow” home, and Pittsburgh’s newest concert room already has a night worth remembering. That’s the appeal of a night like this from a parent’s perspective: a chance to enjoy the music, take in a new piece of Pittsburgh, and remember that the person you were before parenthood still gets a night out.
