LASERCHRIST - D.I.Y. Bother? ALBUM REVIEW
Featuring an extremely long list of members/ex-members from UK punk groups including: Paperjets, Crash Island, Bat Wings, Low Profile, The Tubby Wilsons, The Trees, and Car Boot Vendors comes a fairly new punk rock band to the scene LASERCHRIST.
With an abrasive name like that, the guys don't shortcut any shit. This lays true with their music as well. With a stripped down, throw a beer bottle to your fucking face punk rock sound reminiscent of Gaslight Anthem meets Dropkick Murphys, minus all of the bagpipes and shit.
Fellow punk rock dad's their selves, this band recently released their forthcoming EP this past April entitled D.I.Y. BOTHER which was mixed & recorded by band member Yusuf Laher, ya the title D.I.Y. is literal.
LASERCHRIST - Oh, ETHYL!
The band recently released their first single off of the album "OH, ETHYL!" via Plasterer Records which follows the band through a series of live performances. The tune itself reminds me of the unique chord progressions that Brian Baker from Dag Nasty used to come up with combined with the raw intensity of Gaslight Anthem featuring a raspy voice, gang vocal harmonies and heavy stripped down reverb + distortion guitar.
Tracks like WHAT'S THE USE? & RAVEBIRD MOUNTAIN MAN remind me of early pop-punk circa 1994 from bands like blink-182 via Cheshire Cat or Dude Ranch with the tight harmonies, questionable song titles and heavy stripped down 3-4 piece band.
Tracks like BIG SMOKE CITY and WE'VE GOT HOPES are a callback to earlier BAD RELIGION (Suffer album) meets harder more mainstream rock like Smashing Pumpkins or Pearl Jam. The band has a sick way of keeping each song interesting in each of the tune's raw form rather than have it be one big blended together mess. Every tune has its own identity.
